BELFAST — Sergeant John Gibbs responded to the scene of a two-vehicle accident April 17 on the Back Searsport Road where a driver lost control of her vehicle, resulting in a collision with an oncoming van.

Retired police officer Howard Dakin, who also happened to be on the road, reportedly told Gibbs that the woman had been moving at a high rate of speed, estimating she was traveling approximately 100 miles per hour as she passed him.

Soon after that, she crested a hill and became airborne, veering into the wrong lane of travel upon landing. Her 2004 Subaru then collided with a full size Maritime Energy van head-on before slamming into trees.

The driver of the van walked away from the accident uninjured, but the woman suffered multiple injuries, including a broken ankle. She was also given a blood alcohol test.

Belfast Police are waiting for test results before determining what, if any charges will be filed against the woman. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
