Angry confrontation at Oceanside East High School leads to lockdown, suspect search
ROCKLAND — An investigation is continuing Wednesday after a student reportedly confronted and threatened a male staff member at Oceanside East High School in Rockland.
Rockland Police Chief Bruce Boucher said that police were called to the high school at 400 Broadway around 8 a.m. for a report of a male threatening another male.
"The call came from a staff member inside the school, and the caller said they were unsure if a weapon was involved," said Boucher.
Knox County Regional Communication Center was advised that the school had gone into lock-down, which prompted a response from Rockland police, the Knox County Sheriff's Office, Maine State Police and Maine Marine Resources.
Boucher said school was not in session, but that there were staff members as well as some students on site for sports activities.
When officers arrived at the school, Boucher said they learned the student had left the area and that no weapons were displayed during the confrontation.
When asked about a report of a weapon, possibly a long rifle, inside the student's vehicle, Boucher said the information is under investigation.
"It is hunting season, so it's not unusual for hunters to carry guns in their vehicles this time of year, but in the state of Maine, it's a class E crime to bring a weapon onto school grounds," said Boucher. "But we are still investigating that."
The student was located later in the morning in Cushing by Marine Patrol and Sheriff's deputies, according to Knox County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Tim Carroll, and was questioned by police.
Boucher said thus far, no charges have been brought.
