Kathy Beck, obituary

Sun, 04/21/2024 - 6:00pm

Kathy Beck, 77, died peacefully with her girls by her side, on April 2, 2024 at the wonderful Sussman House.

Born and raised in New York, Kathy retired to Rockland in 2008 after a successful career in the jewelry industry. Always a go-getter, she started her working life as a sales clerk at Sears department store, and moved up the ladder to become vice president of sales at the jewelry company that had supplied her department. During that time, she also successfully single-parented two young daughters.

Kathy liked to stay busy and wanted to invest her spare, retirement time into her new community. She volunteered at the AIO Food Pantry, Sussman House, Rockland Main Street group, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, and the Vose Library plant sale.

But, by far, her favorite volunteer position was working with Meredith Batley at the Knox County Health Clinic. There, she worked at reception for the health and dental clinics, and also spent many hours behind the scenes filing, confirming appointments and stuffing fund-drive envelopes, usually while listening to her favorite music. In 2018, she was the 'Unsung Hero' award recipient, presented by United Midcoast Charities.

Kathy loved sewing and baking. Friends will always fondly remember her inventive, delicious cupcakes. She enjoyed weekly lunch and movie dates with friends. Always quick to laugh, she threw a mean party which always included fun games and great food.

She loved listening to music, especially Yacht Rock. One of her most cherished, memorable moments was being chosen by Barry Manilow to sing 'I Can't Smile Without You' with him on stage in Las Vegas.

Kathy will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was known as a no nonsense, straight-talker. The only thing she liked to sugar-coat were her cookies! She was also known for her loving, big heart and generous spirit.

Her girls would like to thank the amazing Nurses at Pen Bay Medical Center and Sussman House for providing excellent care.

Donations in Kathy's memory would be appreciated by the Knox County Health Clinic or The Sussman House, both places near and dear to her heart.
